While AI, sensing, and motion control often receive the spotlight, power architecture remains one of the most critical—and frequently underestimated—factors in overall robot performance. As robots become more capable, designers must manage growing demands from actuators, processors, sensors, and safety systems while maintaining efficiency and stability.
One reason many robotics developers are adopting a 48 V Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) architecture is its ability to support higher-power systems with lower current, reducing distribution losses, wiring complexity, and overall system weight. Another major challenge is regenerative energy. During deceleration or load-lowering events, motors can return energy to the power bus. Effective architecture must safely capture, dissipate, or redistribute this energy to maintain reliable operation.
Power design also plays a critical role in perception. Electrical noise generated by motor drives and switching power supplies can interfere with cameras, IMUs, and other sensors. The result may be degraded perception accuracy, sensor drift, or communication errors. Addressing EMI at the architectural level, including power distribution, grounding, filtering, and isolation—helps ensure cleaner sensor data and more reliable robotic performance.
