Welcome to this Product Training Module for the Analog Devices AD5710R, compact 8-channel, 16-bit digital-to-analog converter that can be configured for current or voltage output on a per-channel basis to simplify applications with mixed output requirements. The Analog Devices AD5710R features 8 output channels, with each channel independently configurable as either a current-output or voltage-output DAC, known as an IDAC or VDAC. These DACs have 16 bits of resolution, with the IDAC mode offering a 0 to 50 milliamp output and VDAC mode configurable for a range from 0 to VREF or 0 to 2 times VREF. The outputs have a differential non-linearity of plus or minus 1 LSB, guaranteeing monotonicity.

The device has an on-chip, buffered 2.5 volt reference connected to an external pin for sharing, or it can be disable and used with an external reference. While an external Vref above 2.5 volts can be used, the actual output voltage range for VDAC mode is still limited by the 5.5 volt max AVDD and the 70 millivolt headroom.

The AD5710R also includes a 27 to 1 analog multiplexer for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. This can monitor the output voltage, output current through a sense resistor, or the supply voltage for any given channel. It can also output the sense voltage from the internal die temperature monitor or be tied to analog ground.

Channel configuration, internal or external VREF selection, and MUX channel selection are all configured via the SPI interface. It also includes a Load DAC, or LDAC, function that can be triggered via software or hardware. This allows the controller to load updates for one or more DAC channel registers and then apply them to the DAC outputs simultaneously. Without LDAC, the DAC output updates as soon as the new DAC code is sent over SPI.

The AD5710R is housed in a 2.1 by 2.2 by 0.5 millimeter 25-ball wafer-level chip-scale package and can operate from negative 40 to positive 125 degrees Celsius. The AD5711R provides the same functionality in the same package with a 12-bit DAC resolution.

The AD5710R enables a single 8-channel device to address mixed-output requirements that would otherwise use separate VDAC and IDAC components.

This integrated approach can reduce component count, simplify PCB layout, reduce solution size, and lower the risk of supply-related signal integrity issues compared to using separate IDAC and VDAC components.

The AD5710R also supports designs requiring more than 8 output channels. Two address pins allow up to four devices to be controlled over the same SPI bus, with no need to provide a separate chip select line for each device.

This enables a host microcontroller to control up to 32 analog outputs with one SPI bus. This can scale even higher, enabling a modular or tiled implementation with the use of additional chip select pins.

The EVAL-AD5710R evaluation board provides a quick way to test the mixed output functionality of the IC. Power supplied via a USB type C interface is converted using a MAX77859 switching regulator. A set of Arduino-style headers simplifies prototype interfaces to many microcontrollers, or connection to a PC running Analog Devices’ ACE software using the SDP-K1 adapter board. A PMOD interface further expands the options for interface and control. Analog Devices also provides drivers for easy integration into application code for the host processor.

The AD5710R is suitable for optical networking, instrumentation, data acquisition, automatic test equipment, process control, industrial automation, and other applications requiring mixed voltage and current outputs with tight space-constraints.
