Banner Engineering SD50 Status Display - Unboxing | DigiKey

We take a look at the SD50 Status Display from Banner Engineering. These displays feature a large alphanumeric display and multicolor LEDs that can be configured to clearly communicate critical information. Inside the box, you’ll find the SD50 with a 5-pin M12 cable for easy connectivity. The housing is rugged and durable for use in industrial environments and is IP65 rated. Connectivity options include discrete, IO-Link, Modbus, and wireless using Banner’s R70 Serial Data Radio. In this demo we’re going to program a sequence of messages to show up on the SD50 using Banner’s Pro Editor software and Pro Converter Cable, which is available in a kit that includes a splitter and power supply. Connect the SD50 to the single connector side of the splitter, and connect the converter cable and power cable to the other side. Plug in the power supply and plug the converter cable into a USB port on your computer. You should see a steady amber LED and blinking green LED on the converter cable if everything is working. Open Banner’s Pro Editor software and connect to the SD50, which should be auto-detected. The SD50 can be configured in various modes when paired with the appropriate sensor, including as a measurement indicator for distance, tank fill level, or position; a counter for tracking items on a conveyor; or as a countdown or count-up timer. For this demo, I’m going to load a config file that has the LED colors and text pre-loaded for 6 states in a sequence. Advanced Settings is highlighted because I’ve also changed some of the display settings. You can also configure which pin or wire to use to advance and reset the sequence. I can’t toggle the sequence directly from the editor, but I can preview each of the states by pressing its start button in the Pro Editor software. This is readable from 10 meters, providing clear information at the point of use and in areas where HMIs can’t reach. The multi-color options also provide an immediately understandable status alert.
