We take a look at the NCV760040 Evaluation Kit from onsemi. This allows you to easily evaluate the automotive grade quad high-side power switch IC designed for sensors, LEDs, ADAS, infotainment and zonal architecture. Inside the box, you’ll find the assembled kit, with the NCV760040 evaluation board and the ONMCU3V3R2GEVB control board pre-installed. There’s also a USB-A to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C adapter. In this demo we’re going to use the board and its control software to switch a power rail on to drive a load and monitor the output. The board features two inputs rated at 4.5 to 28 volts: Vin1 and Vbat. The Vbat input is reverse protected and supplies the 3.3 volt regulator that powers the NCV760040. Vin1 isn’t reverse protected. The two are connected through a jumper, but note that this occurs after the reverse protection diode, so we always need to power Vbat. We’ll leave the jumper in place to connect the two rails, and we’re going to connect a 5.7 volt rail to Vbat. That will give us about 5 volts after the protection diode. We have four 100 ohm resistors in parallel, giving us a 25 ohm load that we’ll install on Out4. Connect the control board to your computer via USB-C and launch the evaluation software. The software should auto-detect the board. Click Connect on the bottom toolbar, then open the device control window. If we check EN_OUT_4 and write the register, LED4 will turn on to indicate that output is on. Then we can change SENSE_SELECT to item 4, write that register, and then read the ADC_READOUT to get the measured current. The software gives you access to the rest of the settings, including the per channel current limit and diagnostics for easy monitoring and control.
