Phoenix Contact Compact Safety Relays – PTM | DigiKey

Welcome to this Product Training Module for Phoenix Contact PSR-MC35 Ex i safety relays. These provide functional safety switching with intrinsically safe inputs for monitoring safety devices in hazardous environments where explosive atmospheres may be present. The PSR-MC35 series features four intrinsically safe inputs. Two are used for monitoring the safety device (either a single-or dual-channel type, as required by the application) and two are used for connecting reset/startup functions. All of the inputs and their associated reference terminals are part of the intrinsically safe block, allowing the connected user interface elements to be located in hazardous areas up to zone 0, where continuous explosion hazards exist. The relay has two safety outputs, each with two normally open force-guided safety contacts in series. The outputs are rated to switch up to 4 amps at 24 volts or 2 amps at 230 volts AC, and a mechanical service life rating of 10 million cycles. The relay operates from a 24 volt DC supply with a 55 milliamp typical supply current. It can be wired for automatic or manual, monitored start operation. It also has a digital alarm output and LED status indicators. It features a 17.5 millimeter wide housing that saves space in the control cabinet. It’s available with either screw or push-in terminals for flexible installation. It also meets safety requirements up to SIL 3 and PL e. The PSR-MC35-EXI series addresses hazardous-location safety architectures where the relay mounting location and the field-device location fall into different Ex zones. The two intrinsically safe inputs support integration with field devices in Ex Zones 0, 1, and 2, while the module is intended for Zone 2 potentially explosive areas and connected equipment capability includes Zone 0 gas and Zone 20 dust. This provides broader zone coverage compared to competing solutions. It’s also designed for operation in harsher process engineering application environments than standard safety relays. PSR-MC35-EXI relays offer an extended operating range up to 60 degrees Celsius and they have a coated PCB to protect against corrosion in humid environments. Phoenix Contact PSR-MC35-EXI safety relays are suitable for emergency stops, interlocks and other field device monitoring in oil and gas processing, chemical and petrochemical plants, pharmaceutical production, and process control systems requiring intrinsically safe interfaces.
