XRP Classroom Triage and Troubleshooting guide

If you've ever stood in front of a classroom full of students while an XRP robot starts driving in unexpected circles and you're not entirely sure why — this post is for you.
I've been deep in the XRP robot ecosystem for a few years now, which led to an opportunity I didn't see coming: leading a train-the-trainer workshop at Minnesota State University – Mankato in June 2025. We worked through the platform with 10 high school teachers and College of Education faculty, covering how the XRP robot works and walking through the resources available through the consortium of organizations behind it.
The first training went well enough that we ran it again this year — this time with 15 additional high school teachers and IEEE students joining the mix. Before planning year two, I sat down with the teachers from the first group to debrief: what worked, what needed more depth, and what was missing entirely. One theme came up consistently in that last category — a practical troubleshooting reference. They wanted something a teacher could reach for when things went sideways mid-lesson, without needing to dig through documentation on the spot while 20 students waited.
That feedback turned into the XRP Classroom Triage and Troubleshooting Guide — a two-page reference built around the issues that actually come up when you're running a classroom fleet. It doesn't cover every possible failure mode, but it covers the most common ones, organized into five sections:
- Core Startup and Communications Diagnostics — what's behind sudden curves, jitter, and connection problems at startup
- Jumper Wire Configurations — what happens when the ultrasonic or reflectance sensor connections are wrong, and how to sort it out
- Flash Memory Rescue Protocol — step-by-step recovery for an XRP that's gone completely unresponsive
- Electro-Mechanical and Fringe Diagnostics — servo arm jitter or hum, and line following that breaks down in variable lighting
- The 3 Golden Rules for Fleet Management — a three-rule framework for preventing most of the above: Elevate to Educate, Hands Off at Boot, and Establish Axle Audit Routines
That last section is probably the one I'm most proud of. Build those three habits into your classroom routine, and a solid chunk of the diagnostic sections above becomes much less relevant.
This guide will keep evolving. The second training group is already surfacing a few edge cases I haven't documented yet, and I'll be tracking what comes up as these teachers get back into their classrooms this fall.
