Enterprise IoT Organization has provided a side-by-side comparison of M2M and IoT to make it easier to understand as these terms are commonly confused or sometimes used interchangeably. The Internet of Things and Machine to Machine communications have many things in common including the fact that both have remote device access. However, there are some important differences: IoT accommodates the same devices, assets and machines as M2M applications, but also low-power and passive sensors, as well as inexpensive devices such as wearable technology. IoT devices communicate via IP networks, and their data (usually big data) are incorporated into enterprise applications to enable improved service, operational efficiency, and new business models such as Product-as-a-Service.
